Do you "Transmedia"?
This month I'd like to introduce you to a new Transmedia
concept.
It's a new "hot" topic in media and
some of you probably already use it
without realizing it.
Henry Jenkins in Paris, May 25th 2012
Henry Jenkins, the pioneer of Transmedia, during his conference in Paris on May 25th 2012 introduced the following definition:
"Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story".
"Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story".
Anita Ondine, transmedia expert specified the elements of
Transmedia:
" Stories that transcend media, Using a variety of story forms, Across multiple media platforms Within a unified storyworld. They Encourages
audience participation, A social
experience , Embedded game mechanics and are Designed for multiple
levels of engagement".
According
to Lance Weiler, transmedia can be used to: tell stories, develop concepts, rehearse with
actors, build audiences, market and promote, develop new revenues streams.
Below I
resume an extraordinary Transmedia course : Transmedia Next London (London,
14th -16th May 2012).
"Transmedia Next London 2012"
Transmedia Next London 2012 is a course that I took In London between May 14th and 16th.
I must admit that it's the best class that I've
taken so far.
Actually, I feel like Neo in "Matrix", when he was disconnected by the "rebels" and he woke up in a new "real" world. The difference is that I'm rather "connected" to a new reality. My brain is making connections on different levels and ... It's just great. Simply, "This is it!".
Transmedia training regrouped media specialist from different European countries and with different backgrounds.
We were shut inside a building for 3 days and had no choice but to completely immerse ourselves in transmedia. What a great idea! A big head's up to the Transmedia Next team!
And by the way, upon our arrival we received email indicating that one of the participants was missing. Very strange...
But it was only the beginning of an incredible story...I'llget back to this later on.
We had the lectures with transmedia experts who taught us how to construct a
transmedia project from A to Z.
J Marshall, I von Staden, L Weiler
Anita Ondine, filmmaker and transmedia storyteller
Inga von Staden, media expert, innovation mediator, dialogue facilitator and coach
Lance Weiler transmedia story architect, writer / director of film, TV and games
They
encouraged us to dare to do things, to share and to have fun.
Here are
some crucial questions that you have to ask yourself before starting a project:
- What is the story about?
- What does the story mean to you?
- Why does the story need to be told?
- Where is the story best told?
Afterwards,
we were divided into 3 teams with the
goal to construct a transmedia , social project, with connection to our group's
name. I was in a "Hope" group
(I miss you guys).
Thus, as soon as we
learned the theoretical part, we implemented it in practice.
Each team
had a coordinator, the experienced transmedia producer. Nina Simoes , Brazilian interactive documentary maker, researcher, story architect, was
our angel.
Anita Ondine
The experts: Anita, Inga,
Lance, Jonathan were always nearby, ready to helped us at any stage of the
project.
The third day, we had to present the pitch in front of a group of professionals
that came to judge it.
I
greatly appreciated working on the team
where everyone had a crucial role to play and where each opinion was respected. The brainstorming session was very creative:
plenty of ideas.
We also went through some tough moments. But we
managed to overcome them and to present the project of "Olympics of Hope"
.
Our pitch: "All over the world the
building that have been used for the Olympics have been left empty. Millions of pounds of public money
wasted. The communities around them left
empty.
We want to create the Olympics of Hope - an
opportunity for London to own one of the stadiums from the 2012 Olympics."
Clues to solve...
Additionally, we had to pay attention to a
mysterious security man with black glasses that observed us and had a
misleading behavior.
Mysterious security man
To sum it
up: intense and unforgettable moments.
The Transmedia
concept is proof that we can work with experts from different fields and form teams
where creativity is flowing and ideas are exchanged. It Is also proof that we
can work with passion, with enthusiastic people and bring to life projects
that make the world a better place.
So why not start doing Transmedia today?

Hit in France and the most commented show in the world : "BREF"
One of the
most commented series in the world, transmedia French comedy
"Bref" is a great hit in
France and abroad. During this MIPTV,
The Wit classified it among the first 3
most popular shows in a world. In France it's a real success story, an event
that never happened before.
Only after
3 weeks of broadcasting on Canal+, Pay TV Channel, and on the social
media, it had already 600 000 fans on
Facebook. Today, there are about 2,5 mln fans.
The pitch
of this show is what life is all about : first we were born, in the end we die.
Between the two, things happen. Bref, it's the story of a guy in between the
two.
It's a
short comedy - each episode lasts about
2 minutes- that shows real life of a normal guy in his thirties. Boasting a great sense of humor, funny
actions, a swift narration mainly via
voice over and post-production effects that "cut" the plot make it a
hit.
Two
authors: Kyan Khojandi and Bruno Muschio
didn't predict that they would create an outbreaking event. Thay
just came up with a good idea.
Canal+, which invested in the
original series, gave them a chance and they put all their hearts into it.
Harry Tordjman from My Box Productions,
produced it.
It's a
quality series. 6 days are needed to produce 1 episode: 2 days for writing the screenplay,
1 day for the shooting - approximately 4 hours of shooting for 2 minutes- and 3
to 4 days of post-production, ie coding, special effects, VO, calibrating,
etc.
Today,
there are 64 episodes and it's a second
running.
In march 2012, DVD with the first 40 shows was on the market.
Of course
guest stars appeared in "Bref", but in an original way: almost 20 of
them are combined in one episode "Bref, there are people who get on my nerves” and the main character
talks to them without knowing that they are famous.
The first
episodes were broadcast in September 2011 on Canal+ and almost simultaneously
on Facebook and Twitter. The authors negotiated with Canal+ that every episode could
be accessible freely on website for a long period of time, not only for 7 days,
as it's a common habit in France (after it's a VOD).
Moreover, on April 30
2012, Canal+ included "Bref" in its widgets on IPhone Canalplus and on IPad CanalTouch.
The account
on social media is managed directly by the authors, not by Canal+. Page Twitter
@brefserie is hold by @navavo and @kyank.
Kyan
Khojandi and Bruno Muschio are young,
"connected" authors from generation Y, who surf on internet, watch
videos on Youtube, zap them rapidly. They created this comedy for a TV channel, but in a way that it is perfectly
fitting for the web.
The best TV series in Poland, "a mix of Mother Theresa and Spiderman"
As I'm proud of my roots, I'd like to present a particularly interesting Polish TV series ”Into Deep Water”, awarded with the Gold Plaques in the Festival "The Hugo TV Awards" in Chicago, nominated in Monte-Carlo TV Festival, and coproduced by Polish public television: TVP.
This format was presented by TVP during MIPTV in Cannes.
"Into
Deep Water” directed by Magdalena Lazarkiewicz, is a story of enthusiastic and idealist social
workers that face the toughest social problems of our society.
![]() |
Wiktor Okulicki (Marcin Dorociński)
The central character is Wiktor Okulicki
(Marcin Dorociński), a freshly nominated director of the center. He is a man
with a complicated past, that uses sometimes non - conventional
methods in his work.
A man of action, not
of words.
Each
episode focuses on a different social problem and on characters struggling for
help.
There are 13 episodes of 45 minutes each that were broadcast on
channel 2 of TVP.
”Into Deep Water” created a lot of buzz in Poland
and abroad. Thanks to this show, many discussions revolving social issues started
to rise and possible solutions that the society could offer arose.
The role of social worker seen as "a mix of Mother Theresa and Spiderman" came to the fore.

Practical cases of digital signage in transport: Barcelona, Paris and Warsaw.
Digital
signage like posters, interactive posters
and tv channels in transport have become an integrated part of our lives.
TV in buses in Barcelona
Mini TV
channels placed especially in metros, buses are very helpful to kill time when
going to work, to keep inform about news, cultural events, cinema, and
entertain us when we going back home after a long day’s work. It's also an
efficient means of advertising.
I get used
to watching them when I'm travelling abroad. In Warsaw, Poland, I watch news in
buses and in undergrounds. In Barcelona, Spain, screens welcome me in the
bus I take from the airport to the city
center. So I have quick outlook at what's going on while I'm staying
there.
MouTV screen in Barcelona
Moreover, In Barcelona
there are also screens in the underground stations, between railways and in
trains. JCDecaux launched MouTV in
Barcelona and signed a partnership withTransportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB). Today the network has 19 inch screens inside 48
buses, large format projection screens on the platforms of 31 underground
stations and 126 screens of 32 and 42 inches on platforms at other stations.
To learn more, click here.
In Paris,
France, digital signage is not as
developed as in other European cities.
Only a few months ago Samsung screens with ads started to appear in the
underground. There are no tv channels in
trains, nor in buses. I wonder why is France an exception.

Samsung media space in airport, Paris
However,
many efforts are made in airports where there is true high-tech strategy. For
example there is a Samsung media space where we can relax, listen to the music,
watch videos, connect our smartphones to
seats fitted with loudspeakers . Or even tables that can be used as a batteries
and where we can recharge our smartphones.
And in "Digital Corner" we have access to interactive,
touchscreen table where we can play games while waiting for our plane .

MIPTV 2012 - Les tendances

10 minutes with Tom Bannister, CEO of SXM Media
In 2006 Samsung created a short film website called http://www.anyfilms.net/ and I saw it. At that time, my company was a short-film sales agency. We tried to sell them some of our short films, but instead they proposed us to produce short-films for them. So we developed some short films for Samsung. And from that we did some viral campaigns, one called Europe United. I developed a relationship with Samsung slowly from 2005 till 2009. In 2009, we pitched them for Fact Checkers Unit, season one. They came to America, we talked more about series, they liked it and we brought NBC as a partner. That was a beginning.
How do you adapt the content to different platforms: web, mobile? Do you use a different format?
It's the same format. Each episode lasts about 5 to 7 minutes, but each one is broadcast on tv as well. However, they are mainly created for the web and for mobiles. [...] The storytelling is perfect for a short format because each episode is an enclosed story. So you don't have to watch episode 1 in order to understand episode 10. That was one of appealing things for Samsung, that each episode was a separate film.
Each episode begins with a given fact that FCU has to check.
[...] Few people know that a magazine fact checker is a person that checks the articles. I think there are two things about this production. One is about a friendship, and the other is about two guys that have a boring job, but they make it interesting. I think a lot of people in real life know this situation: a job that might not be exiting. But FCU is about taking that job and making it exciting. So fact checkers go into the field and act like secret agents. It's all very silly, but they make life interesting and that's why people like this series. That's probably what the phones are all about: listening to music, watching videos, going on Facebook - all these things on your phone make life more interesting, your phone becomes entertaining.
Can we find additional content on social media?
FCU has a HULU page, YouTube page, Facebook and Twitter page. On each of those pages you will find the main content as well as additional materials: shots from the field, interviews with the actors. When we worked with NBC, there was a page on NBC.com, with MTV - a page on MTV.com. We are currently creating a FCU web TV, that will be ready next month.
What is the 3rd season of FCU about? Have you got a media partner?
The third season will be more about new media, social networks as Facebook and Twitter. No media partner this time.
[...] We try to do third season based on supernatural facts, like X File, but this idea has not yet been agreed on.
What is the audience of FCU?
The audience was initially technology geeks, between 18 and 30, slightly more men. We are looking to appeal to people who write about technology, technology bloggers.
The Galaxy Note is a creative device that has many drawing functions. Thus season 2 was dedicated to creative professions.
Season 1, with Galaxy Note was a little more mainstream audience.
Moreover, we have a global audience: in Asia, in the UK (big followers), in the US, Australia. It's a little more popular in English speaking countries because this comedy translates better if you are an English speaker, even if there are subtitles on them. However, it's a concept that people understand in any languages.
What is your business model?
Samsung underwrites the costs. That's why the product is integrated in it.
What are the statistics about this show ?
There are 9 million views: 4,5 million on You Tube and 4,5 million on MTV and it was just for season 2.
What is a next challenge for you?
The music web series with Viva. There is a web network live on You Tube that does music videos, so we are doing a pilot for them next month.
What I can wish you?

What is a next challenge for you?
The music web series with Viva. There is a web network live on You Tube that does music videos, so we are doing a pilot for them next month.
Moreover, I constantly develop series, like a series call "CTRL", with Tony Hale, who plays Buster Blue. It is a scripted comedy about magical computer and we produced season one with Coca Cola and NBC. But then Coca Cola has decided not to do season 2, so I've been trying to find a computer brand or a technology brand to sponsor the "CTRL" because all the series are about a magical computer. It's hard to get brands to sponsor these kinds of things and I think that it might be partly due to the economy, and it's still a new format of marketing.
My company does a lot of different productions: from entertainment to advertising. FCU is somewhere between. But for example Matumbo Goldberg with Comedy Central is an entertainment production. There is no sponsorship. It's very risqué and a little bit controversial.
I'm really interested in the healthcare industry too. I think a healthcare industry is perfect for online videos because the first thing that somebody does when diagnosed with something is to go online, searching on Google. I'd love to produce programming for that audience. We did series with Disney called "Diagnosis stories" about diabetes which is all about families discovering that their kids has diabetes. It's a documentary series about real families and real solutions to real problems.
What I can wish you?
My perspective on work is more about doing something that you could be proud of, that you enjoy doing it, than about making money or trying to be successful. I'm more interesting in unique experiences.
• The Voice, CH2, Israel avec 19 240 likes
• Tallafornia, TV3, Ireland: 8 760 likes.
• The Voice, BBC One, UK: presque 25 000 abonnés

Média sur Facebook and Twitter
Richard Kastelein, Managing Director *Agora Media Group Ltd
